2. Nature and scope of our advice
We provide financial advice to our clients in relation to:
Mortgages / home loans, residential lending, refinancing and restructuring
Personal risk insurance, life, trauma/critical illness, income protection, mortgage protection and health/medical cover
KiwiSaver, choosing a scheme, fund type and contribution rate to suit your goals. We advise on the following KiwiSaver schemes: Generate (Generate Investment Management Limited), Milford Asset Management, and NZ Funds (New Zealand Funds Management Limited). Depending on what suits you, your KiwiSaver may be arranged directly with one of these providers, or through NZX Wealth Technologies (NZXWT), an independent investment administration and custodial platform.
Investments, advice on, and arranging of, managed and index funds, ETFs, direct shares, bonds and other fixed interest, and cash and term deposits. Most of these investment products are arranged through NZX Wealth Technologies (NZXWT), an independent investment administration and custodial platform. We also hold agency agreements with a number of investment providers, including Generate Investment Management Limited and GoCIO Limited, which allow us to arrange their investment and managed portfolio services for clients where appropriate.
Other, business risk insurance, business loans, commercial and construction & development loans, and vehicle & asset finance are provided directly. Wills are arranged by referral to Footprint, we do not receive any commission for these referrals. Home, vehicle & contents insurance is arranged by referral to Tower Insurance or Initio, both of whom pay us an upfront commission of 0.10% and a trail commission of 0.05%.
KiwiSaver and investment advice is currently provided by Rakesh Verma, Director & Financial Adviser. Mortgage, personal risk insurance and other advice described above is available from either adviser named in Section 1.
We provide advice on products from the following product providers only. Because we work with a defined panel of providers rather than the entire market, our advice is limited to the products offered by those providers.
Lending: Abcom, ANZ, ASAP Finance, ASB, Avanti Finance, Basecorp Finance, BIZCAP, Blossum, BNZ, CFML, Cressida Capital, DBR, Finbase, First Mortgage Trust, Funding Partners, General Finance, Heartland Bank, Lendr, Merx, Midlands, NZCU Baywide, Pallas Capital, Pepper Money, Prospa, RESIMAC, SBS Bank, ScotPac, Select Home Loan, Southern Cross Partners, Sovereign, The Co-operative Bank, Unity, Welcome, Westpac, XCEDA, and Zip Business
Personal & health insurance: AIA, Asteron Life, Chubb Life, Fidelity Life, nib, Partners Life, Southern Cross, and UniMed
How your investments and KiwiSaver are held. We do not hold client money or investments in our own name. Investment products, and KiwiSaver where you choose this option, are typically administered through NZX Wealth Technologies (NZXWT), an independent investment administration and custodial platform, held in your name with online access so you can view your portfolio at any time. Alternatively, your KiwiSaver may be held directly with your chosen provider, Generate, Milford, or NZ Funds, under their own scheme rules. Where a managed portfolio solution is more appropriate for your circumstances, we may arrange this through GoCIO Limited, a licensed provider of discretionary investment management services. The specific custodial and platform arrangements that apply to you will be confirmed in your personalised advice.
What we don't advise on. We do not provide advice on derivatives, or wholesale/complex financial products. We do not directly provide discretionary investment management services (DIMS); where a managed portfolio solution is more appropriate for your circumstances, we may arrange this through GoCIO Limited, a licensed DIMS provider, as described above.
3. Fees and expenses
In most cases, you will not pay a fee for our advice:
Our insurance and KiwiSaver advice is generally provided at no charge to you.
Most of our home loan advice is also provided at no charge to you.
In some situations a fee may apply, for example:
If a home loan is repaid or refinanced within 28 months of settlement and the lender claws back the commission paid to us, a fee of up to $3,000 (plus GST) may apply, calculated at $250 (plus GST) per hour of time spent on your loan, and capped at the amount of commission we have to repay to the lender.
Investment planning fee (one-off): a fixed project fee, typically $250 to $4,500+ (plus GST) depending on complexity, to review your current position and prepare your investment strategy. If you'd prefer, this can instead be charged at an hourly rate of $250 to $400 (plus GST).
Ongoing adviser fee: where we continue to manage your investments, ongoing adviser fees range from 0.25% to 1.5% (plus GST) per year of the total portfolio value, often paid monthly, as agreed with you.
Managed fund and ETF costs: underlying fund manager fees, typically 0.35% to 1.5% p.a. depending on the fund. These are paid to the fund manager, not to NZOne.
Platform, brokerage and custody costs: separate from our fees, the investment platform charges its own tiered administration and custodial fee based on your balance, and brokerage and foreign exchange costs are charged separately, at cost, by the broker. These vary by platform, trade size and market, and are set out in full in your personalised advice.
Discretionary investment management (DIMS): where a managed portfolio solution is arranged through GoCIO Limited, our licensed DIMS provider, we are remunerated for arranging it through our own ongoing adviser fee described above, often paid monthly, as agreed with you, not by GoCIO. GoCIO's own product fee is separate, applies in addition, and is paid to GoCIO, not to NZOne. This is confirmed as part of your personalised advice.
If any fee will or may apply to you, we will tell you about it, including the amount or how it is calculated, and when it is payable, before you proceed, so you can make an informed decision.
4. Conflicts of interest and commissions
For most of the advice we provide, we are paid by way of commission from the product provider (the lender or insurer) when you take out a product on our recommendation:
Insurance: insurers typically pay us an upfront commission based on the first year's premium, of up to around 230% of the first year's premium depending on the insurer and product, and may also pay an ongoing (renewal) commission of up to around 30% per year while the policy remains in place.
Mortgages: lenders typically pay us an upfront payment (commission, or for some lenders a fixed adviser fee in place of commission) of around 0.50% to 1.50% of your loan amount on settlement. Some lenders also pay a small ongoing (trail) commission of up to around 0.20% per year while your loan remains with them, and a small number pay a fixed refix fee (up to around $150) each time we re-fix your loan with them.
KiwiSaver: our KiwiSaver providers pay us a one-off commission of around $40 to $300 when you join a scheme, depending on your contribution level in the first 12 months, and an ongoing commission of around 0.10% to 0.25% per year of your account balance while you remain a member.
Investments: we're remunerated for investment advice by the fees set out in section 3 above (a planning and/or implementation fee), rather than by commission from investment providers. This means our investment recommendations aren't influenced by which provider pays us the most. Where we arrange a managed portfolio through GoCIO Limited, we do not receive any commission or other payment from GoCIO; we're remunerated by our own ongoing adviser fee, as set out in section 3.
To make sure our advice is not influenced by these commissions, and that we prioritise your interests:
We follow an advice process that puts your needs and goals first.
We base our recommendations on research and your circumstances, not on which provider pays the most.
We disclose the commissions and any other incentives relevant to your advice before you proceed.
We maintain a conflicts of interest register and review our compliance programme regularly, including annual adviser training on managing conflicts of interest and regular independent compliance reviews.
From time to time we may receive minor incentives from product providers, such as invitations to lunches, sporting events or conferences, or provider-branded items, and we may meet with providers for training or accreditation purposes. We have a policy in place to make sure nothing we receive compromises the advice we give you or creates a conflict of interest. Aside from the commissions and referral arrangements described above, we do not have any other conflicts of interest to disclose.
